The Attention Economy

The Guardian’s Jemima Kiss is a media reporter who has written about digital publishing since 2002. In a recent article she examined the current landscape and looked to uncover ‘Why the real challenge is the competition for attention’.

The iPad was originally hailed as the publishing industry’s knight in shining armor. A handheld mobile device that was going to miraculously pull the industry back from the brink of catastrophe … it hasn’t quite panned out as well as they would have hoped.

Hunt on Marketing

My friend Jonny Campbell has published a short interview with Ted Hunt over on his blog. Hunt worked in the capacity of Digital & Emerging Media Manager at Innocent Drinks for four years, growing and engaging a huge social following from the ground up.

There’s a saying that marketing is what you do when you’ve got a bad product. Good products have always generated conversation and social media is just highlighting this right now. Bad products will need to continue to bombard people but good products will earn their attention just as they always have done.

Little details maketh the UI.

What makes a good design a great design? Attention to detail of course. Especially those little ones that add something extra into the mix. More often than not a little detail will come in the form of a usability improvement. At other times it can be a visual component, used to shape context. They all have one things in common though, they add an element of delight to the user’s overall browsing experience. Time for a Qwiki?

Qwiki is a brilliant little web application that packages content on any given subject from Wikipedia and presents it as a nifty little video with voice-over. Qwiki aims to give users ‘The Information Experience’; I enjoyed the 30 or so minutes that I spent on the site. I’ll be back for more soon!
